Life in Pakistan


While in a work setting, address a senior or colleague by placing a "Sahib" after their name or just by calling them "Sir". Female staff is addressed by saying Miss before their name. Lower ranking staff is addressed directly by name or occupation. Friends are addressed by name or by the word "yaar" which means friend. It is extremely impolite to call someone of the opposite sex "yaar" as it holds a negative meaning when applied to the opposite gender. Pakistani's tend to be casual about deadlines and punctuality. Punctuality is important in business however it's not practiced socially. .
             5. Gender: Pakistan is a male-dominated society where women have very little recognition. This is because Pakistan is set up where society is run by norms and traditions set by men. Islam is the predominant religion in Pakistan and in that religion it enormous power to the men and all decisions about women's involvement in the society like education, marriage, work and travel are made by male family members. Pakistanis don't like to discuss their women in public and gender equality is perceived as a western influence in their society. When a male Pakistani is asked he will say that women are treated with more respect and gentleness then men. .

             There is a big class structure in Pakistan. People from wealthy families are considered respectable. In Pakistan people are respected for who they are rather than what they are. Pakistani society is very class conscious and is purely economic and political. Families in the armed forces and involved in government organizations are important. Landowners are preferred over businessmen. Rural areas are dominated by "feudal lords" who control land and resources of their area. Family backgrounds have significant influence over how people behave with each other. .
             Religion:.
             Religion is very strong in Pakistan and the majority either follow or are forced to follow the religious beliefs and practices.
