A Study on Obesity

Obesity is a leading cause of death worldwide, which is somewhat unbelievable considering that this disease is completely preventable. With diet and physical exercise, obesity can be treated. Those who limited their intake of fats and sugars and increase their fiber intake can help reduce body fat. There are drugs that may be taking to reduce ones appetite and or to absorb fat all together. Another way for obesity to be treated is for surgery, such as a gastric bypass or lap-band which both reduce the stomach size so the patient can only consume little food intake. Even though there are many treatments for obesity, they are not easy. Most people that are obese face a difficult time losing the weight and even more so, keeping it off. There are chemical, emotional and physical factors that are all linked with successful weight loss. .
Some believe that a person's hormones may cause them to overeat and this is why some people have a hard time maintaining weight loss. "Does Exercise Make You Overeat?"" by Gretchen Reynolds, addresses the question, "Do some people respond to exercise by eating more? "For years and years, many people believed that each person hormones decided if they would increase food intake or decrease food intake after they would exercise. In two recent studies, it showed how exercise could change ones desire to eat by how that person's brain responds to the sight of food. "The population in the first study was 30 young active men and women. Two experimental sessions took place, where they draped their heads in functional M.R.I. coils. The researchers wanted to track activity in portions of the brain known as the food-reward system, which includes the poetically named insula, putamen and rolandic operculum. These brain regions have been shown to control whether we like and want food. In general, the more cells firing there, the more we want to eat. But it hasn't been clear how exercise alters the food-reward network.
