Marginalization in the Movie Gattaca

It also highlights how no interview was required because only the genes are scrutinized, not any other contributing factors that the viewer's context (if the viewers context is going to be an important part of your argument it might need to be included in your intro) would associate with being selected into a job, demonstrating how those with superior genes are privileged
The viewer is then shown Vincent talking to his father about his dream job, an astronaut with his father bluntly explaining "the only way you'll see inside a spaceship is if your cleaning it", followed by a shot of the invalids all dressed as janitors. This highlights how the invalids are marginalized because they are given menial jobs that require no skill and lack prestige. The invalids are not given a chance either, just assumed incapable and useless, emphasizing the importance of having superior genes. Gattaca's society is shown through the invalid Vincent to value the commodity of superior genetics by discriminating and marginalizing the underclass invalids by giving them menial jobs and assumed incapable. .
The use of camera shots and the symbolic use of color and setting constructs Vincent's determination to overcome his version of identity dictated by Gattaca's society. His dictated version of identity is a weak, incapable, discriminated invalid. When Vincent is first shown challenging his valid, superior brother Anton to a swimming race, the camera identifies the murky and dark water is symbolic of the challenges that Vincent has to overcome. The color of the water gives the impression of fear and gloominess indicated by the terrifying shadows, heightened by the knowledge that Vincent lost and almost died through the swim. However, Vincent's determination to beat his brother and overcome being thought of as incapable allows Vincent to try again (if at first you don't succeed, try try again). When the viewer is shown the second race between Vincent and Anton, in contrast to the previous scene the camera identifies the, now, glimmering water.
