How Animals Attract Their Mates

There is not always enough females for all males to reproduce and there is often a lot of competition for females. In this case the most dominant male will get to reproduce with the female. Of course the main way to decide a male's dominance is by fighting and an animal that does this is the lion. Lion fights are vicious and can result in serious injury and very rarely death. The female simply stands by and watches while the two males battle it out. After which she will always subdue herself to the victor. .
However it is not always the case that the male is the most dominant of the pair. When it comes to spiders it is the female that is larger, and stronger than the male. The courtship of spiders is quite unique and unlike that of any other in the animal kingdom. The male is attracted to a female's web by her scent of blood from a recent kill. When a male finds a female web he must be very cautious for the female spider can attack and kill the male if she is not interested. The male spider will send vibrations through the female's web in order to let her know of his intentions and if she receives him as a mate she will let him know by sending vibrations back. However, that is not the end of the threat to the male. Once finished with copulation the female will most likely attempt to kill the male as a first meal for her offspring. Fifty percent of male spiders are killed during or after mating (Ramel).
Another arachnid with a unique courtship is the scorpion. Scorpions mate at night and it begins with the male and female moving around each other and touching every once in a while which can last up to 20 minutes. Then the male will suddenly confront the female and grab her pincers with his and they will dance together moving back and forth for around 10 minutes with their stingers in the air or intertwined. At the end of which the male drops a sperm package on the ground and pulls the female on top of it.
