The Concept of Self

He believes that knowledge and ideas are acquired through experience, and experience gained through reflections or sensations. He is a little less extreme than Descartes. Descartes concluded in his meditations that he could not acquire knowledge through sensation because it could not be completely accurate. I agree with the Locke's idea of the blank slate. He believed that the first marks on the blank slate are important and lasting. The early ideas are those that create the foundation of the early self and consciousness. I also agree that the self has the ability to perceive and reason. .

David Hume, a Scottish philosopher, was a bundle theorist who believed that the self is nothing but experiences or "perceptions" connected by the relations of causation and similarity. He held that the idea of self is similar to that of a bundle. He later rejects the idea of the self altogether with a "No-Self Theory", perceiving self much like a Buddhist. The Buddhist theory is that each individual is a combination of five aggregates of existence, also known as the Five Skandhas. The Five Skandhas are form, sensation, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. Importance of the Skandhas is that they are empty and that no individual may possess them. So ultimately, it is a doctrine of no self, which is called Anatman. .

The bundle theory makes little sense because if you could study two people that do that same exact thing and are raised the same, they would think similarly but still have different thoughts and operate in their own way. My twin, Archer and I, were inseparable from the womb through childhood. We were raised by the same parents, treated equally and given the same opportunities. Today, we have become two complete individuals with diverse interests, hobbies, and career choices. My strengths have always been his weaknesses and vice-versa. He excelled in school at an early age, while I struggled.
