Adapting and Overcoming in Literature


"No one knows that he did it for himself; that pride, whose slave he was" (419). However, Brother's pride takes him over and eventually kills Doodle. When Brother realizes that Doodle cannot meet his standards, he left Doodle behind in a storm in fit of the frustration. Brother fails Doodle, all because of the humiliation Doodle causes over the years. Brother is influenced by his pride, which has causes Doodle's death. It was only after Doodle's death that Brother realizes what his own selfishness has led to Doodle's death. Eventually, Brother realized that "pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death " (419). "The Scarlet Ibis"" illustrates the dangers of pride. It is beneficial to have pride, but too much can consume people.
             "The Necklace"" written by Guy de Maupassant, shows us that greed and envy can lead to destruction. In the story Mathilde is a beautiful and charming young woman who is born into a middle-class, but desperately wishes to be wealthy. She has always dream of a life that she could not have. "She grieves incessantly, feeling that she has been born for all the little niceties and luxuries of living " (Maupassant 199). She thinks that she must have been born into the wrong life, and "she is unhappy as if she has really fallen from a higher station(Maupassant 199). Finally she gets a taste of life in the upper classes when her husband is able to get her a ticket to a ball, which she has always dreamed. However, an unexpected crisis changes Mathilde's life: she loses the diamond necklace she borrowed from her upper-class friend, Madame Forestier. Rather than telling the truth that she has lost it; she attempts to buy a replacement without her friend's knowledge, because she is unable to suffer the embarrassment of telling her friend the truth. Because of it Mathilde and her husband toil desperately for the next ten years to pay off the debts for the replacement of the expensive necklace.
