In life we as humans would like to believe that there is good in every single person no matter what their past may have been like. What is the definition of good? Good is to be positive or desirable by nature. In the short story "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" there are predicaments that are presented to some of the characters when the act of good can be shown, but they turn out to do the total opposite. In the story the character named the misfit was presented with a chance to be good and help a family out in their time of need but instead he turned out to be bad news. This is an example of situational irony. In the story "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" there were signs of foreshadowing, symbolism, irony and motifs that stood out to me more than others. .

In this story the colors red, gray, and black showed up a few times as motifs that were in the short story. I would like to believe that these colors had a specific roles to play in the story. Red signifying blood and danger, black signifying danger and death, and gray being the time between death and danger. These symbols were represented on the clothing some of the characters wore and by the description of the woods where the family had the accident. The woods was described dark and black the author even went so far as to say "the woods gaped open like a dark opened mouth " (O'connor,542) this lets us as the readers feel a sense of something bad is going to happen in the woods. This is also an act of foreshadowing. .

This story was filled with lots irony another example I seen was when right after they had the accident the grandmother thought to herself the house they been so looking for was not in Georgia, but was in Tennessee. This is an example of Dramatic irony because we knew something she never once said to Bailey or the family. These symbols and indirect way of telling the story all lead up to the time of death for the family.
