The Apocalypse and The Road

There has always been a sense in people's hearts for what is right and what is wrong. The sense that tells you to turn that lost wallet or purse into the lost and found. The sense that makes you feel good when you open the door for a stranger, and the sense that helps you make good choices when faced with tough decisions. While this is how most of our minds work, there have always been bad people in this world. They think completely different. Some think it's okay to keep a man's watch he forgets in the train station bathroom, while trying to hurry to catch his next ride. Others think it's okay to hold an elderly lady gun point for all the money in a cash register at a road side gas station. These people had their goodness corrupted by situations they were put in throughout life, turning them into bad people. Everyone is built with a sense of good inside of us. .

In Cormack McCarthy's The Road, there are many signs of good people. The world, as everyone knows it, has come to an end and it is a perfect time to see what people's true values are all about. The son and man are prime examples of good people. .
"It's here because someone thought it might be needed.
But they didn't get to use it.
             No. They didn't.
             They died.
             Yes.
Is it okay for us to take it?.
Yes. It is. They would want us to. Just like we would want them to. .
             They were the good guys?.
             Yes. They were.
             Like us. .
             Like us. Yes. .
             So it's okay.
             Yes. It's okay. (McCarthy 139-140).
The boy was always about being one of the good guys. Yet, it was odd that he was never in the real world. By this I mean he never saw the world before the big apocalyptic tragedy. Not ever seeing any acts of good nor acts of evil, the boy was born with a clean slate. There had to be some innate sense of good built in him for him to have these positive acts. Never seeing another kid in his life, he wanted to help the lost boy when he saw him. He wanted to make sure he had food, and someone to take care of him just like his father was doing for him.
