Case Study of Child "G"

The suggestion is that reactions previously not present could be conditioned using methods researched by Pavlov (1849-1936). The methods used in the scenario of 'Little Albert' could be viewed and considered cruel, however in the case of child G, being a constant innocent witness to her parents inappropriate aggressive behavior conditioned her to act in a similar way outside of her home environment; as is witnessed regularly in the day care setting and in other situations such as when the family go on an outing.
In society, a child should have access to or be subjected to stimulating experiences from birth, with people, objects and symbols. To enable a child to meet its full potential, stimulation should be regular and extensive. (Adapted from Bronfenbrenner, 1998, p.996) These forms of stimuli should be positive and appropriate. In Bronfenbrenna's ecological model, place the child at the center and assess the influences radiating outward in importance to the child's development. The development of a chart for Child G was created as an exercise to clarify the complexities surrounding her environment. .
To assess child G's situation, an ecological chart was developed with the aid of her primary carer and it was established that she spends a very large part of her time in the child care setting. The setting is largely her main source of stability and routine. Whilst in the care of her maternal grandmother, child G's regular routine of attending the child care setting is also adhered to and therefore causes less disruption. "Children, like the rest of us, handle change best if it is expected and occurs in the context of a familiar routine." A predictable routine allows children to feel safe, and to develop a sense of mastery in handling their lives. As this sense of mastery is strengthened, they can tackle larger changes". (Dr Laura Markham).
Child G's routine within her family environment has been unpredictable.
