Some of the issues that she identified among facing women in both America and Mali include poor communication among spouse. This resulted into incompatibility and unhappiness among the married partners, which she claimed was the major causes of most divorce in America even though the rate of divorce in Mali were low since women did not have rights to child custody among others. Interestingly, Monique claims that the same issue affected her implying that she is a divorcee making her to proof that despite the long geographical distances, some things are similar everywhere (Singer, Erickson& Wiley InterScience, 2011). .
The book further draws attention to the challenges affecting women in the society. For example, the author claims that as she was trying to learn more about Monique, she discovered that Monique had some problems within her marriage, which caused her much unhappiness. After interacting with the author, Monique opens up to her by telling her that she was having an affair with a man who is not her husband. She claims that she was in love with that man and wanted to marry him, but she could not because of the cultural practice arrangements of her marriage. The author claims that the situation is common in America because infidelity is commonly among the unhappy couples, even though the good thing is that they allow divorce, which is rarely acceptable in Mali for having varying cultural taboos surrounding divorce. The taboos are the major reason why Monique fails to divorce her husband making her have a secret an affair with the man that she loves. Due to the fact that Monique can't complain about her issue in public, due to existing cultural practices in West Africa. Therefore, Monique decides to reveal her secrets to the author, who is a foreigner, regarding her helpless situation since she believed that the author would understand her. Notably, the actions taken by Monique indicates that, despite the cultural norms established in societies to dictate human behaviors, humans fails to follow by usurping cultural control behind the closed doors (Association of American Geographers, 2001).
