Columbus Day recognizes the achievement of a great renaissance explorer who founded the first permanent European settlement in history, the land of America. It celebrates the beginning of cultural exchanges between America and Europe. Columbus Day is a patriotic holiday, or is it? Some people believe that Columbus Day shouldn't be celebrated, because Columbus didn't really discover America. He actually never even set foot on North America. Columbus acted like a friend to the Native Americans, but in the end he killed them all. It is believe that Columbus died not knowing where he was. He died believing he went to India, all the way around the world.
Christopher Columbus thought that if he traveled far enough west, he would arrive on the other side of the continent, in India. He had yet to find out that there was another huge chunk of land in the way, the land we now call America. Columbus didn't actually ever set foot on American soil, so he never actually discovered America. Columbus ended his journey around the Caribbean and Latin islands, never reaching the main land. There Columbus met the native people who he had mistaken for India people.
Since Columbus thought he was in India, he called the Native Americans "Indians". The Indians greeted Columbus and his crew greatly. Columbus was also kind and helping to the native people, but in the end Columbus took over there land and killed every single one of them. Columbus was more of a murderer than he was a hero. We shouldn't celebrate Columbus Day because it isn't a joyful holiday for some people.
Columbus died never knowing that he found the new land. The whole time he thought it was India. Columbus didn't even get credit for discovering the land of America. With all of those nights on the ship and all the hardship he suffered, Columbus deserves a little credit.
In conclusion, Columbus Day should not be celebrated. Columbus doesn't deserve to have a holiday named after him, after all those Indians he killed.
