Cisco's Implementation Team

None of us was going to throw out the legacies and do something big" (Austin, Nolan, & Cotteleer). It was clear that the leaders in each of the different functions were nervous about making the big decisions that may help their functions operate more smoothly. Whether this was because they were afraid of Mr. Slovick or because they were afraid of implementing the wrong system or simply a lack of vision by the functional leaders is irrelevant. It was fear of the unknown and the fear of taking a risk which road blocked Cisco into the massive two day system failure that finally drove them to make some tough decisions.
I believe the most important way to avoid the inertia that Cisco experienced is to hire leaders who are willing to lead and take some intelligent chances. I believe a good manager for this type of project is one who believes in the project. Therefore, a good manager for this project must begin at the head of the organization. If the CEO does not believe in the project, then the project has little chance of succeeding. This does not mean the CEO must be intimately involved in the project, but he or she must publically promote the project to his or her employee's to ensure that all employees" are on board with the company's goals.
Cisco mitigated the risk of going live with ERP by utilizing careful planning and carefully selecting the employees chosen to work the ERP project. Cisco clearly did it's "due diligence" in selecting the vendors for its ERP. They did the necessary research in Oracle and concluded that they offered the best product for Cisco's needs. They also did the same for KPMG and the three companies made successful partners. Once they found the product the implementation team had to add more human resources. I thought Cisco was particularly clever in choosing these people. They only chose the best according to Elizabeth Fee, an implementation team recruit. "They handpicked the best and the brightest for this team" (Austin, Nolan, & Cotteleer).
