             When it comes to the meaning of equality there are numerous ways in which the term can be defined: "the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, or opportunities" (oxford dictionary, 2012). What this definition claims is that, regardless background everyone has the right as well as the prospect to be treat equally to another, despite the prejudice a person may have for another. Equality is about creating a fairer society, where everyone can participate and has the opportunity to fulfill their potential (DoH, 2004). An equal approach understands that society is, based on social categories such as gender, race, disability, age, social class, sexuality and religion that will impact on our life experiences. On the other hand the term diversity means "The state of being diverse; variety and a range of different things" (Oxford dictionary, 2012), whereby diversity literally means difference. When it is used as a contrast or addition to equality, it is about recognizing individual as well as group differences, treating people as individuals, and placing positive value on diversity in the community. .
             United Kingdom is a society which is seen to be diverse; therefore one of the government's initiatives is that everyone has a right to be treated equally regardless, of background gender and age. The New Labor Government defines equality as inclusion and allowing people to reach potential (Walsh, Stephens & Moore, 2000). Although the Labor governments definition is to ensure that full potential is reached, in society today there are still prejudice and inequalities which does not allow people to accomplish their potential.
