Roman Values: Rise and Fall of the Republic

Summarizing in short, the system could be defined as a two-way relationship in which both the patron and the client had duties and obligations that each had to fulfill to for one another. By each completing their duties the system always worked out. Bu emphasizing stability and duty the system mirrored the Roman thought that society relied heavily on people faithfully following through their duties to one another. These moral values helped the rise of the republic because all of them worked together to shape Roman society and government for the time-being, into an entire society working together and having the same common values in life. .

Roman social values such as family and education also played a part in helping the rise of the republic. The most important of these social values was family. Family was seen as the foundation of Roman society for the reason that it taught its own values as well as concluded ownership. The importance of family taught children to respect their elders as well as the parents setting an example of what hard work is. It also showed shared decision-making, which would become vital later on in life. Education taught the importance of knowledge as well determination. It also taught that hard work is essential to be successful.

The downfall of the Roman republic began when the social elite revolted and over-threw the Kings. After this it was a period of time when the traditional Roman values were abolished and replaced with values such as selfishness and personal gain. This all began when both the Gracchus Brothers tried to set new political reforms for the interest of the people. Tiberius tried in 133 B.C.E and Gaius tried in 123 B.C.E. Tiberius was clubbed to death and to escape his own slaughter Gaius had one of his soldiers slice his throat. The violent deaths of these brothers produced a crisis in Roman politics. At that point the elite split up into two separate groups, the populares who supported "the common people and interest" and the optimates who supported "the best people.
