How Mr. Wright Caused His Own Murder

In Susan Glaspell's Trifles, the things that drove Mrs. Minnie Wright to murder her husband were greatly brought on by Mr. Wright's dominating role as the male, isolation, lack of care for Minnie, and robbing her of her very spirit.
Throughout the play Trifles, the characters notice many things by the clues given that show what kind of a man Mr. Wright really is. This helps us to have a better understanding of how Mr. Wright caused his own murder. All of Mr. Wright's actions toward his wife over the years cause Mrs. Wright to want to finally break free. "Mrs. Wright found a way to free herself from the prison that Mr. Wright had kept her in, through murder she escaped"("Trifles"). Ironically the clues that are found which prove Minnie killed her husband are discovered not by the men but by the women who are gathering things to take to Minnie in jail. As the women discover these clues they realize that not only did she indeed murder her husband, but they saw why she did it and didn't blame her for it. The two women saw through Minnie's eyes unlike the men whose focus was on other things. Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peter connect with Minnie and make the decision to hide the evidence from the men.
To begin with, the most obvious and most important clue is Mr. Wright's dominating male role toward his wife. At this time in the early 1900s, a woman's role was to make her husband happy by keeping up the house, taking care of the children, and standing behind what the husband said and wanted even if she personally disagreed. It can be seen in the play that their marriage was not like others; they have no children, don't have a well kept up house, and Mr. Wright is not happy if he doesn't get what he wants. No one is for certain if the reason for not having children is because they cannot have children of their own or because Mr. Wright doesn't want any. Having children was a big thing in the 1900s.
