It occurred to me how much effort I had put into giving my son guidance where television is concerned. "After all, parenting is not an efficient profession. It takes a lot of time" (Anonymous). I started to see the major difference between my co-worker and myself, at least in respect to television viewing. It was apparent that he had simply chosen to approach the situation using the path of least resistance. Instead of communicating openly with his daughter about the programs, he chose to deprive her of the experience. I"m not saying that he had the wrong approach but good communication skills form the foundation of effective parenting. "Many of the problems [parents encounter] would be alleviated, or perhaps wouldn"t even occur, if we communicated with our children more successfully" (Stenhouse).
"Our children are clearly dependant upon us. Because of their youth and inexperience, there's so much we have to do for them, tell them, show them [. . .]" (Faber and Mazlish 139). As parents we should welcome the opportunity to educate our children. Depriving our children of life experiences hinders the communication process between children and their parents. Perhaps some parents choose this method to avoid conflict. Whatever their reasons they do not excuse a parent's responsibility to prepare their children to cope and function in the world. "One of our important tasks as parents is to send our children out into the world with a strong and healthy sense of self-esteem. Self-esteem has a decisive influence on our ability to function as effective, independent, emotionally stable individuals" (Stenhouse). That sense of self-esteem comes with educating children about the realities of the world and then allowing them to use that knowledge to make their own choices. Obviously children will still need guidance, however, the opportunity to make the choice is what creates the important sense of self that self-esteem is built upon.
