Staten Island man, Farooque Ahmed, was arrested for attempting to help al Qaeda plan multiple bombings in the Washington D.C. area. Ahmed, a computer engineer from Virginia, made sketches and surveillance videos of the subway stops of the Pentagon, the Arlington Cemetery, and a nearby mall for who he believed to be al Qaeda, but was actually the FBI (Kennedy). On July 19,2010, Ahmed met a man who he believed to be a member of al Qaeda in a hotel room to give him a memory stick containing video images of a Metrorail station in Arlington. He also agreed to "case" two other Metrorail stations in Arlington as locations of terrorist attacks. Furthermore, he provided suggestions on where explosives should be placed in order to kill the most people and how terrorists should pack their bombs in order to avoid suspicion. He met continually with individuals he believed to be a part of al Qaeda to discuss "jihad" and even volunteered to go overseas if needed. Throughout the investigation, he provided surveillance of the Courthouse, Pentagon City, and Crystal City Metrorail stations outside Washington (Thomas). "It's chilling that a man from Ashburn is accused of casing rail stations with the goal of killing as many metro riders as possible through simultaneous bomb attacks. Today's arrest highlights the terrorism threat that exists in Northern Virginia and our ability to find those seeking to harm U.S. citizens and neutralize them before they can act," said US Attorney, Neil MacBride (Kennedy). .
On Tuesday, a federal grand jury charged Ahmed with attempting to provide material support to a designated terrorist organization, collecting information to assist in planning a terrorist attack on a transit facility and attempting to provide material support to help carry out multiple bombings to cause mass casualties at D.C.-area Metrorail stations. If he is found guilty, he will face up to 50 years in prison (Thomas).
