Ongoing investigations are still attempting to find the body of David Hartley, who was reportedly shot by pirates, according to his wife Tiffany. The couple was riding jet skis on Falcon Lake, when they wandered onto the Mexican side, even though it is a known stronghold for the Zeta drug cartel (AOL News). Tiffany claims that the couple had gone to the other side of the lake that straddles the Texas-Mexico border to take pictures of a small church when a band of pirates opened fire on them (Owens). According to her, one of the bullets struck her husband in the back of the head, knocking him from his jet ski. She attempted to pull his body from the water but was forced to retreat when the shots continued (Lohr). .
Tiffany's story initially faced a lot of skepticism. Marco Antonio Guerrero Carrizales, the district attorney whose area covers Falcon Lake, told The Monitor newspaper, "We are not certain that the incident happened the way they are telling us." On CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360," Tiffany said she would take a lie detector test to prove that her story is true. "If that's what the authorities think I need to do, then that might be an option," she said. Later, on HLN's "Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell," Tiffany tried again to persuade people that she was telling the truth. "I know what I know. God knows the truth. And other than that, it almost doesn't really matter to me, because I know what happened that day," she said (Lohr). .
Recently, the authorities have gathered evidence to back-up Tiffany's account. Zapato County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez and his department recovered blood from Tiffany's life jacket that fits in with the Tiffany's story. Gonzalez told the Denver Post, "I just believe her" (Lohr). .
Texas authorities have questioned whether Mexican officials are doing all they can to solve the case. Texas governor, Rick Perry, said, "I'm not satisfied; I don't think we're doing enough.
