Analysis of Barack Hussein Obama's Inaugural Speech


             Nixon's resignation in August 1974, President Gerald Ford began his inaugural address with the observation that the "nation's long nightmare was finally over." Many observers might have felt the same way as they watched President Barack Obama deliver his inaugural address on January 20, 2009 at the U.S. Capitol in front of two million American citizens. Promising the American public and its nervous allies "a new era of responsibility," the president delivered what many analysts regard as an inaugural speech that provided the reassurances the nation was seeking during a particularly turbulent period in the country's history. In this regard, this paper provides an analysis of President Obama's inaugural speech, followed by a summary of the findings in the conclusion.
             Review and Analysis.
             Following a brief introduction wherein the president expressed his humility and gratitude for the trust placed in his by the American electorate and thanked his predecessor for his contributions to the country and for his cooperation during the transition, President Obama immediately launched into an explanation of just how much trouble the country is in economically and politically. For example, President Obama (2009) made it clear that, "We are in the midst of crisis. . . . Our nation is at war against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age" (Obama 2). A powerful orator and charismatic individual, the president went on to .
             emphasize that despite the enormity of the challenges confronting the United States today, the American people are a hardy and brave lot and history has shown time and again that these problems would be addressed - and resolved - but it would take time. In this regard, President Obama emphasizes that, "Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real.
