In private circles and in the media, Al Gore's movie, "An Inconvenient Truth," was the subject of many jokes, parodies, and even some serious discussion. In Great Britain, in October of 2007, a London High Court judge in an uncommon ruling on what secondary school children could be shown in the classroom determined there were nine key errors in scientific fact. Mr. Justice Burton was quoted as saying that some of these points he determined as untrue had been "in the context of alarmism and exaggeration," according to The Times Online Edition of October 11, 2007.
However, a look at recent news seems to show that Mr. Gore's critics are and will continue to be proven wrong at calling him an "alarmist." The following evidence is likely just the "tip of the iceberg." The Associated Press reported on August 27 of this year that "sea ice in the Arctic Ocean is at its second lowest level in about thirty years." Scientists characterize this fact as a "global warming tipping point" and speculate that by the end of the season, it could be a record-breaking year.
With this trend, within 5-10 years, the Arctic could be free of ice in the summer. NASA ice scientist Jay Zwally said, "It also means that climate warming is also coming larger and faster than the models are predicting and nobody's really taken into account that change yet.".
Reports are coming in that large amounts of methane gas are being released into the world's oceans from the melting of long frozen Arctic sea ice. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and is expected to speed up the global warming effects. Bob Corell, who directed a team of multinational scientists that assessed Arctic conditions a few years ago gave his opinion, "We're moving beyond a point of no return.".
And these are just a few of the observable and measurable events taking place on our planet quite recently. Damage to coastal areas is a great concern around the world.
