The Internet's Effect on the Music Industry

Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry and more recently Jordin Sparks have been the most successful. Each one touches a different genre and only Kelly Clarkson has reached international super stardom. Other contestants have put out a song or two and have disappeared from the limelight. But American Idol produces at least 12 potential money makers each year. They merely need to release a song to iTunes, make their money and move on if the artist doesn't have potential to continue on. It doesn't matter to the recording industry anymore. .
An example as previously mentioned is Kelly Clarkson vs. Clive Davis. After racking in over $100 million in revenue for the label for her album Breakaway, which gave her two Grammy awards in 2006, Clarkson had earned the right to call the shots for her next record as stated by Simon Cowell. The suits said the only hit on Breakaway was "Since U Been Gone," and disregarded songs she wrote for the record. However, three of the five singles released were written by Clarkson including the smash hit "Because of You" which she wrote when she was 16. Beaten down by promoting the record with a total of four tours and a lonely road, Clarkson began writing more with her backing band. Turning in the material, Davis publicly dismissed the record as not sellable because it had "no hits." This was in part due to because she refused to take the $10 million offered to her to replace or rework 5 songs and work with the hit writers she worked with on Breakaway. Clarkson's response? "It's my face, it's my time, there's my album and there's no other choice. The label has never been in love with anything I've ever written.".
Kelly stood her ground to release the dark personal collection of songs, knowing that this was one album out of a career and she needed it for her. This proves music is a venting practice and she refused to be a formula all the time to be No. 1. This album showed off her rock chops to a harder degree than the pop rock tunes on Breakaway and showed a sweeter melodic singer-songwriter style on songs such as "Maybe" and the heart-breaking prayer "Irvine.
