To recognize that this text is based on an impression of Los Angeles and the state of California requires the reader to distinguish between the different kinds of cities in the USA, and the hallmarks of each city.
English language discourse: The reader of this particular text would also require a discourse in the English language, in order to recognize that this text is a westernized, English language text, and not a text based in other languages. .
Signifiers:.
The signifiers that allow me to make these judgments are firstly, the bands name and their history within the field of rock music. The accompanying disc of music also illustrates to me that readers would require a rock music discourse to make meaning from this text.
The picture of the ocean, along with that of the mansion and swimming pool overlooking the beach, and the title of this particular album are signifiers as to why readers would require an urban cities discourse to make meaning from this text. This is obviously a Californian based text; readers would have to be aware of California's reputation of a sunny paradise, the home of movie stars, as opposed to Seattle as a depressing wasteland, the home of grunge music in the early 1990's.
As I can see this text of this language is English, as illustrated by the front cover, the lyrics on the inside and finally, the music on the disc is sung in the language of English.
3. Intended audience of the text:.
The intended audience of this text I feel would be young, male westernised urban teenagers. As well, males ingrained in beach culture such as surfing and body boarding. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have a reputation in the music world of appealing to male fantasies, with many derogatory lyrics about sex, drugs and women. These factors would appeal to the young male fans, as it provides young men with a fantasy of life that many of these young men would find attractive. .
Another intended audience of this text would be current and former fans of the band.
