Macbeth


            Topic: Everyone blames the witches or Lady Macbeth - really Macbeth is solely responsible for his own downfall. He was simply too greedy! How far do you believe this to be an adequate explanation for what happens in Macbeth?.
             Purpose: to explain who is responsible for Macbeth's downfall and the reason being.
             Audience: Those who wish to explore the many issues raised by Macbeth.
             The evil actions committed by Macbeth cannot entirely be blamed on Macbeth as Lady Macbeth and the witches also play a role in Macbeth's downfall. Macbeth was too ambitious; he knew his desire to be king involved an evil path of which she persuaded. Even as ambitious as Macbeth is his conscience outweighs his ambition, Lady Macbeth persuaded Macbeth to do whatever it took to become king. But the entire plot of the play started with the witches prophesies of things to come for Macbeth and Banquo.
             The destruction of Macbeth was partly due to this ambition. It is Macbeth's greed that lends itself to Macbeth killing Duncan. He is at war within himself, his conscience versus ambition. His greed leads him to succumb to commit evil deeds. Macbeth had many paths to choose from, he chose the path which he believed would bring him greater glory. "My thought, whose murder is yet but fantastical, shakes so my single state of man, that function is smothered in surmise-.
             Macbeth realizes that evil leads to more evil "Things had begun make strong themselves ill", making him afraid of carrying out the deed as it will return to him. "That we but teach bloody instructions, which being taught return to plague the inventor: for this even - handed justice" to torment him further for it is an act of evil.
             Lady Macbeth's role in Macbeth's downfall is due to her want for her husband's success in his desire to become king. She contributes to Macbeth's destruction, as it is she whom persuaded Macbeth, whom resolved to kill Duncan. She invocated evil powers, asking for a great favour, to fill her cruelty in order to aid Macbeth in his rise to greatness.
