A Pivotal Moment in my Childhood

The Little Checkbox that Changed my Life:.
Grand Haven, Michigan or should I have expressed it as every kids dream. I heard the wake from the boats crashing against the boardwalk as the sky transformed from a clear blue to neon orange. Voices smoothly flowed beyond lips commencing from a sense of relaxation and comfort. I breathe deeply, captivating my surroundings, for I was merely eight years old and have never experienced such a place. Glancing over my right shoulder, I caught a glimpse of my older brother. His eyes seemed to be just as overwhelmed as I had been. He looked back giving a sense of comfort to me as we continued to walk. Approaching quickly was my father. His arms flared back and forth as we heard our names being shouted across the harbor. As the boat reached my vicinity, I saw the smile on his face, a beer in his right hand, and a cigarette in his left. I couldn't help but smile back since it was his hard work that brought my brother and I to such a place.
"Hey, what are you kids doing?" my father stated sniffling his nose.
"Nothing, just walking around." We waved goodbye and continued to explore Grand Haven. All I thought about was the freedom we had, the privilege to do whatever, whenever we wanted. Being with my dad was completely contrary to my life with my mom. You see, my mom set boundaries and curfews. We always had chores and homework to be completed. It was like a nightmare. The second we got with my dad, we were on our own with a pocket full of money.
When the nights approached, Grand Haven transformed into a whole new place. People were no longer walking with comfort but more trying to walk in a straight line. Boats filled the harbor tying on to one another and cars crowded the streets. Music was played at thunderous levels, as beer and wine were being passed around. The stench of cigarette smoke and old alcohol became present as the wind shifted to the east.
