How Babe Ruth Changed Baseball

             During the six months Ruth proved to be a major talent. Dunn kept adding more money on to his salary. After a few months Dunn was losing money left and right from the Federal League. On July 8, 1914 Ruth was sold to the Boston Red Sox along with two other players for $8,500. Ruth's career in professional baseball had begun.
             The Boston Red Sox signed Ruth to a two and a half year contract for $3,500 a year. Ruth made his pitching debut with the Red Sox on July 11, 1914 against Cleveland. Ruth defeated Cleveland 4-3. His next three starts were no decisions. Ruth was sent back to the minors where he hit his first professional home run. The next season the Red Sox called Babe back up.
             The next three years, Ruth was one of the best left-handed pitchers in the American League. He won a total of 65 games. In 1915 the Red Sox won the World Series, but Babe only batted once and did not pitch in the whole five game series. The Red Sox won the championship in both 1916 and 1918. Ruth had set the all time record of the most scoreless innings pitched in a World Series game and it was not broken until Whitey Ford in 1962. .
             During the 1918 season Ruth's batting ability became more apparent and he split his playing time between pitching and playing the outfield. In 72 games Babe hit a league leading 11 homers in 317 at bats. In the 1919 season Ruth played 111 games in the outfield and blasted 29 home runs, scored 103 runs, and drove in 114 that season to lead the league. At that time 29 home runs was the most ever hit in a single season. Babe had hit more home runs than entire teams did. .
             After the 1919 season Red Sox owner Harry Frazee needed money to invest in a new play on Broadway. Frazee sold Ruth to the New York Yankees for $125,000. In the 80 years since Ruth was sold to the Yankees, the Red Sox have not won a World Series. It has been called the Curse of The Bambino. In 1920 the baseball world was rocked by a terrible scandal.
