Legalizing Marijuana.
Marijuana has been in the states since the 1500's. In the 1970's, the Controlled Substance Act of 1970 classified marijuana, along with heroin and LSD, as a Schedule I drug; having the relatively highest abuse potential and no accepted medical use. There has been a lot of controversy lately deciding whether or not we should make marijuana legal again in the United States. The opposing side declares that it should stay illegal because it alters the mind and is just as bad as smoking cigarettes. However, marijuana has a lot of positive aspects. Some examples are the medical uses found for marijuana, the decrease in the crime rate, and the positive effects on the economy. This is why I think we should legalize marijuana in the United States.
The medical field has changed rapidly in the twentieth century. Medical research has been recently done to prove that marijuana should be legalized for health reasons. Research from The Legal Times shows that marijuana helps decrease the pain patients go through if they have diseases such as cancer, AIDS, glaucoma, or multiple sclerosis. The research has also shown that making marijuana legal will wipe out about sixty percent of all medications on the medical market including the medication used to help cure or decrease the pain people go through which have these certain diseases.
If we legalized marijuana, the crime rate in the United States would decrease at a relatively fast pace. One of the reasons why it would decrease would be that the drug dealers that sell marijuana wouldn't be able to sell it, therefore going out of business, or else becoming broke. Marijuana is the highest selling drug on the streets today, and legalizing it would cause dealers to decrease. Another fact about the crime rate is that teens wouldn't get involve with drug dealers, therefore decreasing the number of deaths cause by riots between the buyer and the seller.
