Air Force General, Jack Ripper, obsessed by his fears of "the communist conspiracy" ordered the long range bombers under his command to launch a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, only General Ripper had the code that was able to recall the bombers. Once the bombers were on their way, he sealed off his base and refused any type of communication, including telephone calls from the Air Force as well as from the President of the United States. From there, the government's efforts are shown to call the planes back. .
"Dr. Strangelove" poked fun at what was once a sensitive and serious subject. In this movie, I saw the horrors of the nuclear war caused by a simple mistake materialize before me. This film shows an example of one person going crazy and turning destructive technology against society. This was a frightening thought that had really concerned people since the beginning of the nuclear age. Although the exaggerated scenarios that took place may seem to be highly improbable, nothing was impossible. .
The effects of nuclear explosions are shown at the end of the film. Viewing the explosions of the nuclear bombs gave me an eerie chill down my spine. What was shown in the last five minutes of the film can still happen today and possibly have a much more destructive look to it. In the 1940's, many people were afraid of nuclear warfare, but today I think there is a higher chance of that happening. It seems as if more and more countries begin to hate the United States every day. With all the forms of newer and better technology, no body knows if tomorrow will even come; just as people thought during the Cold War.
