Holden is a teenager suffering from many losses, which alters his perception of society. Seeing everything in a pessimistic overtone, Holden believes that everyone is using him as a victim instead of trying to help him. Holden is a very immature person and is irresponsible and self willed. Constantly failing is part of Holden's persona, because he isn't motivated towards our society. After being expelled from Pencey Prep, he embarks on a journey to find the missing parts of his life and try to recover from his lifestyle. During his journey, Holden develops connections with other people, however he breaks all his relationships with others after they have been drowned in his theories and visions. Holden constantly analyzes everything he comes across and due to his loss he sees them in negative lights. .
Holden tries to stand for what he thinks is right but always falls short because he doesn't see the whole only a part or the whole; the negative part. He experiences many situations after leaving Pencey, which matured him and allowed him another chance to see everything rightly again. This allows Holden to understand the society he once shunned, and give him the chance to be more confident in himself. At the end of the book we find Holden is a new person. He explains his feelings like he had never done through out the book, and Holden is filled with hope, which little he had after being expelled. The book gives readers a sense of hope and shows them that there is always a second chance and a better way of going about things.
