Jonathan Edwards' - compare & Contrast

Why do people, sometimes, act one way at one time and then act a different way the next? As I read Jonathan Edwards" sermon it sounded like he was a mean and strict man. His choice of words, the way he compared God to some things, and the way he repeated these comparison all throughout his sermon made him sound very mean and very harsh. But after reading his journal entries about Sarah Pierrepont and how he feels about God, his tone changed a great deal. He did not sound mean and strict, but sweet, kind, and very gentle. Even though his tone differs from his sermon to his journal entries there are also similarities in them. .
In his sermon, Jonathan Edwards, talks about what God can do when he punishes the so-called "sinners", people who have not accepted Christ as their savior. He talks of them going to hell and how God is the only thing that can stop this. He compares God or God's wrath to many things such as great waters and also a bow and arrow. He also compares the "sinners" to some things like, insects, a serpent, and also a stubborn rebel. He sounded very negative in his sermon because of these comparisons. .
However, in his journal entries he talks about how sweet Sarah Pierrpont is; and it's all because of God. He used the words sweet, pure, just and conscientious, wonderful, calm, and he also says that she is right and does not commit sins. He also talks about how he feels about God; how he believes that He is everywhere, how God made him not afraid of some things like thunder and lightning, how he appreciates things because God's glory, His wisdom, purity, and love is in them. .
As you can see in both the sermon and the journal entries he talks about God. In both there is a belief in God and his powers and abilities. He also talks about how God is in control and He is the Savior; He is the only one who can stop the sinners from going to hell and how God went into the mind of Sarah Pierrepont and how he filled her mind with sweet delight.
