My Grandma would always say to me, "Do your best in whatever you do, but do it for yourself." These words of wisdom have been kept in my mind for many years since I was a child. It has grown even more inside of me since her death last year. It was not surprising to me to have ranked highest on the Personal Success Value System. The Personal Success Value System is strongly related to me because I believe in accomplishing all my goals in order to have a prosperous and skillful career, I respect myself, and I take pride of my own individuality.
To begin with, my accomplishments in life are rooted towards my own satisfaction, not towards another person. One incident I can recall is the time during middle school, where my plain goal was to obtain those perfect "A's" on my report card. I tried my best to attain my ambitions by studying hard and spending most of my time doing school work, but I unfortunately ended up with a "B". Though my parents did not mind me failing to manage the grades I desired for, it was devastating for me to acknowledge the fact that I did fail to succeed. I believe in trying my best at everything I do in order to fulfill my objectives for my own good. Even though my parents play an important role towards my success in informing me about the right routes to take and pushing me to excel, I take part in doing everything for my own benefit.
Also, I believe each person should have respect for themselves and to trust themselves in what they do to reach their ambitions. To me, self-respect is an extension of one's ego or priceless virtue. Without it, a person would not have the power to flourish or mentally establish their own free will. One of my good friends in elementary school thought of herself as a great artist, but the truth was, she was better off excelling in another activity. She asked me once about her paintings and I immediately told her the truth. I believe that in order to retain your self-respect, it is better to displease the person by informing what you know is right, than to temporarily please the person by telling them what you know is wrong.
