I am against abortion because as an intern at a women's clinic I have seen the physical, mental and emotional effects it has on many women. I have seen many women claim to suffer (to some degree) from post-traumatic stress disorder also known as "post-abortion syndrome" This is characterized by long-lasting guilt, depression, rage, social and sexual dysfunction. .
Abortion was created to aid in certain situations in which a woman could not or did not want to give birth to a child or to care for the child. Abortion is a method in which the baby is still in the mother's womb, and the living embryo/fetus is killed. Abortions are preformed for many reasons; if it is an unwanted pregnancy for social and/or financial reasons or if there are medical circumstances with the child or the mother. Such medical circumstances include; genetic irregularities, such as Down syndrome and the parent's feel that they are incapable of caring for the child. However, often, what are not taken into consideration are the negative effects after abortion, psychological and physical. Ultimate results may actually be worse that the problems, which were to be solved to begin with. These after-effects should be focused on and dealt with in a better manner than they usually are.
Many feel abortion causing psychological problems is just a myth, but research supporting it is there. From the time of just after abortion to years later, there is severe psychological trauma that does occur. These feelings may lead to more serious grief responses as well as depression. In some cases, it may lead to serious psychological disorders such as major depressive order and post traumatic-stress disorder. The strongest recorded feeling a woman has after an abortion is anger and guilt. The shame comes from looking back at the experience. The anger comes from knowing they were responsible for their shame.
Studies by pro-choice researchers also conclude that women often have difficulty showing their coping in life after and abortion.
