An Inspector Calls

An Inspector Calls is known as a well-made play. Its progression is that ignorance to knowledge. The writer of the play was J B Priestley who observes the classical unities of time, place and action. The play of the An Inspector Calls played first in Russia, in the 1945 just after the two World Wars. .
We may suggest that the play was set in Russia because Priestly was trying to preach a left-wing message to the converted rather then allow his play to be judged with an audience with mixed political views. The play was set to show the audiences of the sufferings before World War1 in 1912 and gave the audience the power of retrospection of knowing what would happen after the play. Which meant the characters had no hold of the audience's minds by making the play after the two World Wars? .
Arthur Birling was made to seem conceited by being the spokesperson for his family values as he says in Act 1 "a man has to look after himself and his family too" "and so long as he does that he won't come to much harm". Through out the play he acts like the spokesperson for his family values. Arthur Birling was criticising the well-known left-wing playwrights from the years of the 1912 by saying, "we can't let these Bernard Shaws and H G Wellses do all the talking". This meant he also criticised the same values as J B Priestley (J B Priestley was a left-wing playwright which means writers with a social sense of right and wrong.) .
The Inspector Goole is made as G-d like figure by the stage direction as he enters; he was constructed as a man in his fifties, dressed in a plain darkish suit and an impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness. That is how the stage directions described him. Also during the play in Act 1 when he was relating the death of Eva Smith, (Eva Smith died because she had swallowed a lot of strong disinfectant. This burnt her inside.) To Birling and Gerald, whatever he did had an effect on everyone, as Arthur Birling says, "still I can't accept any responsibility.
