The first day of anything new is always nerve racking especially the first day of class at Rock Valley College. Most freshmen are right out of high school and are embarking on a new journey. Pulling into the parking lot I noticed millions of cars and people walking around campus. I notice upperclassmen reacquainting themselves with peers they saw semesters before. I see others finding old friends thankful for someone to talk to so to not look stupid standing alone. I see adults who decided to return to school after many years out of high school hoping to obtain their degree. There are people smoking cigarettes, people talking on cell phones, people eating, and people just visiting with others. .
There seem to be many differences and similarities between high school and college that I've noticed. Classes seem to be conducted the same way, except class is not required and food and drink is allowed. Walking outside to smoke a cigarette between classes is never something you will see a high school student do. I was shocked when I saw others walking in and out of class at their own will, and when I saw others eating and drinking during class and the teacher not saying a word about it. .
The first day of class at Rock Valley College I arrived early just in case for some reason I were to get lost. My heart was beating at about 100 beats per minute. I was nervous. I had it set in my mind that I would get lost or something terrible would happen that would make me late to class. I found the building of my first class. That was the easy part. I slowly climb the stairs to the second floor and find room 226 Introduction to Fiction. I passed by the room and rummaged through my backpack attempting to find my schedule to reassure myself that this was the right room. I walk into a silent room filled with students making eye contact with no one. Everyone is sitting in their desks starring straight ahead, afraid to make the first move to talk to someone.
