School Violence

How Society Views Violence In Schools.
In the past few years there has been a definite increase in the incidence of violence in the schools. Society is at a loss for answers. There have been numerous programs put in place at schools to help deal with students that might show signs of violence, however, many time the violence that occurs is from the least expected student. Who is to blame? The answer is not a simple one. There are three areas of concern are lack of parental support, cliques in schools, and loneliness. Although these three areas are not nearly the only reason for violence, I believe they are a majority of the problems.
Parental support, or lack of, is the first area of concern. It has become an issue in many areas, including violence in schools. We live in a society today where most of the two-parent families both work many hours. Many single parent families have the parent working two or three jobs just to make ends meet. The time being spent with the children has decreased. There are more things that kids are involved in today than there was in the past. The stress placed on the parents and the students to succeed is having the opposite effect. Parents want to be successful in their line of work; therefore they spend the majority of their time and effort with their co-workers. Many students are left to fend for themselves. There are more before and after school programs offered by the schools than there has ever been. As a result, the students are turning to their friends so they will have a feeling of belonging.
The next type of students that may become involved with violence in schools are the ones that are looking for a group to join. The groups these students are turning to be not always the most respected groups in school. It seems like the gothic, skaters, punk rockers, just to name a few, are the most receptive to someone who is looking for a friend.
