The vast majority of people aren't readily acceptant of those who deviate from .
what is considered the "norms" of society. In writings especially, readers are accustomed .
to being exposed to a limited array of subject matter. When a writer pushes .
himself/herself from the expected, the public response is rather harsh. When a literary .
figure chooses to discuss topics that are not known to be discussed, or are considered .
inappropriate, how are readers supposed to react to the shocking material placed before .
them? When vocalists decide to "change the game" in music and include unique lyrics .
and varying points of view to subjects never before uncovered in a piece of music; how is .
society to react? These writers/vocalists, often known as artists, are categorized by a .
single word- Outlaw. These Outlaws have taken words and their meaning to a different .
level, a level that is often not accepted by the mainstream. .
Of all the Outlaw artists, I particularly find the rapper/ writer Tupac Shakur the .
most intriguing. Not particularly because he is of African American descent, but because .
prior to my knowledge of the Outlaws, I have listened to much of his music, read a .
number of his writings. I personally feel that I have a better understanding of this artist .
than I would any other. In addition to that, Tupac's work is of modern day. His poetry .
writings, his raps, even down to his death- it's all modern day. What better way to .
uncover the possible feelings and ambitions of a literary outlaw figure than from .
knowledge of the era in which this artist dwelled. Since I"m growing up in almost the .
same time frame in which Tupac Shakur spun his web, I am at a greater advantage of .
understanding and relating to possible forces which may have influenced Shakur to write .
and feel the way he has. .
On June 16, 1971, Tupac Amaru Shakur was born into a world of racial and .
cultural issues. Being that his mother, Afani Shakur was a member of the Black Panthers .
