The task of a military sniper from its earliest days is to neutralize highly important strategic targets. Today, however sniping doesn't always mean just picking off live targets; it is to combat very important technical facilities such as radar stations, electronic installations, and command centers. Snipers have must have three very important skills. A sniper's most important skill is observation, the next most important skill is stealth and the other is marksmanship.
When snipers are deployed in combat they work in two man teams. One carries the sniper rifle and the other is equipped with a sub-machine gun or assault rifle, he will also carry a spotter scope and a radio. The radio that the second man carries is the most dangerous weapon because with that they could destroy an entire division by calling in an air strike or an artillery strike. This means that the enemy will have a harder time finding the sniper team because they aren't really doing anything to give away their position. Also while calling in an air strike a sniper can give his commander information on enemy movements so that he can take advantage of the situation.
Sniping is what most snipers enjoy the most though and they can be very effective at it. In most cases the sniper even if he is a bad shot, can have a tremendous impact on the morale of an enemy unit. Each man begins to fell as though someone is out there taking aim at him ready to pull the trigger at any time. In some missions snipers are told just to harass the enemies defenses. This is because of the demoralizing effect it has on enemies. It discourages them to move from their positions and makes them scared to move so they can't improve their defenses. During the siege of Khe Sahn in Vietnam, the Viet cong or VC would post a sniper on a nearby hill. The snipers would harass the Marines. So the Marines would bomb the hill and kill the sniper. Eventually the VC posted a sniper who fired but didn't hit anyone.
