The Case of Jim P


            In the case of Jim P he was suffering from schizophrenia which is a chronic mental disorder characterized by loss of contact with reality and disturbances of thought, mood and perception. Some symptoms a person may develop with this disorder are a formal thought disorder such as their speech which is hard to follow due to their disordered thinking. Some times many victims believe that have special powers such as x-ray vision or they believe others are controlling their thoughts which are called delusions.
             Jim P a 21 year old who his parents thought he was lazy cause he would isolate himself in his room and have an interest in weird hippie religions. Jim also read books on mysticism and reincarnation he would also laugh and speak to himself. This disturbed his parents; they felt it would destroy his chances getting into law school. Jim's parents took him to a psychiatrist after doing a thorough history on Jim it was learned that he was hospitalized briefly in college for "hearing things". Jim signed himself out of the hospital because of fear of taking medication. Eventually Jim dropped out of school. Jim was prescribed antipsychotic medication which he rarely took. Jim's mother talked to the psychiatrist but was told she was interfering with the treatment. Soon his parents stopped paying the psychiatrist and got him a new one. The new psychiatrist involved the family in the treatment. Jim's symptoms grew worse cause of his parents were pushing him to be a lawyer and blame each other for Jim's illness. The psychiatrist told Jim's parents to have more realistic goals for there son and they began to accept his illness. Jim took a job as a landscaping assistant which he fell in love doing and took great pride in it. Jim parents accepted his job and Jim has remained stable a year into treatment, only requiring one adjustment in medication after the death of his uncle. Jim continued working and has not been hospitalized since.
