The book I read was entitled The Winter Hero. James and Christopher Collier wrote the book. It has 152 pages and has a copyright date of 1978. It is historical fiction.
The main characters in the story are Justin, Major Mattoon, Peter, Captain Shays, Molly, Uncle Billy, Levi, and Tom. .
The year is 1789, and Peter, a revolutionary war hero, has settled down on his 50-acre farm in Massachusetts. In this region everyone is in debt to certain people called "river gods." These people are all very rich with huge mansions and positions in politics, such as Major Mattoon. Major Mattoon has just taken Peter's oxen to pay off his debt. As Peter's and other peoples rage grows, a plan to overthrow the "river gods" stirs up.
Justin is Peter's stepson. At age 12, he doesn't fully understand what is happening, but enlists in Captain shay's army with only his father's broadsword.
Captain Shay's army is a group of people, some without muskets or bayonets, which are going to try to overthrow the river gods and take control. The state militia will fight against them but they wonder if the militia will even fire on them, seeing they all have the same situation.
Without intelligence Shay's rebellion, as it was called, would lose easily. So they signed up Justin to work as a servant for Major Mattoon. Uneasily and consequently Justin manages to steal some important papers.
The first step to Shay's plan was to close all the courts in the area so the river gods couldn't make the trades legal. They successfully managed to close more than ten courts until the militia opened fire. Now they now this means a real war.
After the major finds out what Justin has done, he tries to kill him with a pistol but misses him by a couple inches. Justin goes back to Molly, his mother, and Peter and re-enlists.
Shay's army marches through many towns until they reach an arsenal with good muskets and bayonets. They try to capture it but fail to do so as the militia opened cannon fire on them.
