Who here has ever downloaded or seen someone else download music from the Internet before? Pretty much everyone right? Who here has ever contemplated the morality of the situation? Not many of us. And who here has ever thought that they might get in trouble for downloading music? Today I would like to talk to you about the pros and cons of downloading music from the Internet. Why do we download music from the Internet? Well, it's easy and most importantly, it's free. Now as of recently, all down-loaders and previous down-loaders are at risk of being sued by record companies.
If you think back a while you"ll probably remember music downloading websites and record companies in the news fighting over, basically the same issue. Is sharing music over the Internet legal. After a long drawn out court battle, the record company triumphed over Napster, the music website that was being sued. Napster then had to pay loyalties to the record companies if they wanted to still do business. So now Napster charges users a monthly rate to download music. The record companies may have won the battle but are losing the war against Internet down-loaders. Music downloading population is as high as it's ever been. .
The file-sharing boom, in which 60 million Americans have grabbed free music on the Net, involves epochal clashes. Status quo business models versus risky progress. Copyright hawks against public-domain geeks. So instead of record companies going after all of the individual Internet sites, they have decided to go right to the source, the people. Last week the recording industry sued 261 unlucky music lovers, who, like millions more, had used Internet file-sharing services to download music. Will the radical strategy work? Personally, I think if record companies are going to try and stop 60 million users from downloading music from the internet, they are going to need a lot more than scare tactics.
