Heracles or (Hercules) is the most popular hero in Greek Mythology. His life story has been told throughout generations and has remained one of the most popular myths of our time. In this essay I will demonstrate his qualities and influences not only in our culture but many others regardless of your opinion of Heracles.
.
Heracles possessed physical traits that make him one of most distinguished heroes of all time. His superhuman strength tops the list. Heracles is the son of Zeus, king of the gods, and Alcmena, a mortal woman. Zeus was married to Hera, queen of the gods, at the time so Hera did not like Heracles (Although his name means "glory of Hera"). Hera sent two serpents to kill him in his crib. Heracles being a demi-god grabbed the serpents and strangled them and used them as toys. This story demonstrates his strength. Infants are not capable of catching two serpents and strangling them at the same time. This story sets up the notion that no matter what stands in his way, he will overcome. .
As he grew up he learned chariot driving from Amphitryon, wrestling from Autolycus, archery from Eyrytus, and music from Linus (Classical Mythology, pp.522). These lessons gave him all he needed to survive his encounters with the many beasts and gods that he faced. Heracles did have a temper though we generally do not think of it as a good "hero" quality. He killed his music instructor with his lyre because Linus struck him. .
Heracles was married to Megara after she was given to him as a wife by Creon after he killed a lion that was eating his cattle. Hera made Heracles kill Megara and their children by making him go mad. He then went to the oracle Delphi seeking advice. This were the story of Heracles and the Twelve Labors begins. .
The hero archetype is one that we as Americans value. Hero's are characterized by doing amazing feats. The most recent example is of course the World Trade Center Tragedy.
