Imagine going to a romantic restaurant with your friends ex, and seeing that same friend at the dining table directly next to you. Doesn't this sound like a sticky situation you would never want to touch? It's kind of an "unwritten rule" that you just don't date your friends ex. Relationships, sooner or later, can have it's complications of ups and downs, and being a good friend to someone experiencing this quandary, means not taking sides. In "taking sides," I mean only thinking about yourself and what you can gain from this, and instead of caring and helping, you realize "this guy is finally single!".
I used to know a group of friends in highschool who came across a situation like this. A girl and her boyfriend were supposedly "in love" and were dating for about eight months. Complications got stirred into their so-called "love," and they ended up breaking their relationship off. About five months down the road, the girl had "moved on" and had a new love life and her now ex boyfriend was taking the transition a little harder than expected. In his retaliation, she came to find out that her ex boyfriend was now after her best friend! This was the last thing she ever thought would happen to her. She came to me, looking for some helpful, accommodating advice. What do you say about a situation like this? This kind of circumstance is just not supposed to happen and there was no way for her or myself to have prepared for this. When breaking off a relationship, the last thing that crosses through your head is "which one of my friends is going to go after him, now that he's single." Well, what ended up happening is her friend really was never a true friend at all, and her ex was just trying to push what she was missing in her face. And maybe her friend thought that getting into a mess like this for some guy was worth it. Whatever she was thinking, she couldn't walk away from this affair without having a huge impact coming with it all.
