A Look at Fashion Through the 50's and 60's


This company, as well as a multitude of others, began to advertise more frequently and through a variety of different arenas. Billboards were erected on highways; ads graced every page of popular magazines. In this way, the consumer was more knowledgeable as to what was available on the market. Efficiency became very important to the companies. Corporations would reorganize so that there were more jobs available and the descriptions of each job didn't overlap. Suddenly, jobs became available in which it was not required that the applicant have an education. Because of this new development, workers could begin in a factory job immediately so as to maintain the economy. Upward mobility was also obtainable, making it easy for new comers to take over the jobs of those who were promoted. The purchases items, as opposed to those needed just for sustenance, was evidence of the upward economic trends. The booming economy made it possible for public figures to become more apparent. People went to more movies, and coveted the styles they saw on the silver screen. Thus, the economy was greatly influenced by the prominent pop culture figures of the time.
             Fashion in the 1950s was influenced by the pop culture stars of the era. Clothing lines began to recognize teenagers as a blossoming demographic. Unlike their 1940s counterparts, teenagers lacked the responsibilities of serving their nation in war, and had disposable income due to allowances and after school jobs. Leisure time was also available, and many teens spent their time at the drive-in movies, local restaurants or record stores with their friends. Pop culture began to target this new, marketable social group; movies, music, and literature started to define their roles and their fashion tastes. Youth oriented styles reigned in the fashion world, and many new designs appealed to the rebellious nature of the young adults, who disapproved of society's conformity.
