This sudden jump in violence causes concern for not only the immediate area of L.A. and surrounding areas, but all of the Unites states. It shows that these kind of gang related crimes may spread into cities throughout the country. Like in the previous article, the rise is blamed on many factors. The economy, as well as lack of program funding, and social issues are all causes of this problem. Although there is a rise in the violence, there has not been a rise in the number of gangs or a significant rise in the number of members. .
My next source of information is titled "New Venue for Gang Violence: Cybercafes-, by Daniel Wood. This article discusses how gangs are effecting a new trend in Garden Grove California. This trend is cybercafes which are places that young people go and pay a fee to use computers to play video games, write and receive email, and search the web. There seems to be gang related violence associated with these new hang outs. Many violent attacks have taken place in the parking lots of these cafés. One incident was a stabbing that resulted in death. Other incidents include a 21 year old being stabbed in the arm, and 2 boys being beaten with baseball bats. I found myself wondering "why these cafes?- while reading this article. The answer is that these cafes are places of entertainment and socialization like a roller skating rink, football games, or even a concert. These types of places come along with social and criminal problems. The City Council has now made a new set of rules including limitations on how late the cafés can remain open, mandating police approved security systems, and eliminating dark windows. Most owners agree that these new rules are necessary, but do not feel that their hours of operation should be limited. Officials are investigating whether or not the actual computer games are the reason for the violence. They are also investigating to see if these kids might be gambling by betting on the games they play.
