The novel I read, Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, is about British boys, about twenty-five in all, that were stranded on a tropical island with no adults. The time of this story was not clear, but it seemed to be around the mid nineteen-hundreds. The main character of the book was Ralph. When the boys first were stranded on the island they all elected Ralph as their leader. There were also two major characters in the novel, Piggy and Jack. Piggy is a fat, asthmatic boy who is always being teased, but ends up being a loyal companion of Ralph, who at first teased Piggy, but then later respects Piggy for his loyalty.
This book starts of when Ralph is elected leader. Ralph immediately starts a fire, with Piggy's glasses, and hopes to signal a ship or plane. Within the first couple of days the entire tribe of boys forget about being rescued and only worry about themselves. After a cargo ship passes by without noticing them, because nobody paid any attention to the fire, the rules change. Ralph gets much stricter about his rules, but his new rules don't change anything. Soon a rumor starts that a beast is on the island. All the "littlums" (the eighteen younger children on the island) are terrified to go anywhere alone and are afraid of leaving the beach at all. Ralph then tries to make more rules, but they all fail to change anything. Soon Ralph makes so many failed attempts, that Jack and his group of hunters separate from Ralph"s tribe and start their own tribe. .
Instead of ruling by rules, as Ralph did, Jack ruled by force. Anyone who did something wrong, in Jack's tribe, was beaten. At first, the two tribes were about equal in number, but quickly people joined Jack's tribe, some joined by force, some by fear of the beast or Jack, and some joined because they like Jack's way of rule. During a big feast that Jack and his tribe hosted, they started to do a ritual dance, that they did every time they killed a pig.
