Not an Average Clerk

John Updike uses Sammy's sense of humor, imagination, and perception to show the aspects of his character in A & P.
Throughout the story Sammy's unique sense of humor shows that he is more mature than most people his age. Sammy's humor is first evident when he checks out a lady at his register. He wittily describes her as a woman who "if she's been born at the right time they would have burned her back in Salem," (344). Age appropriate humor comes from Sammy when he comments about how girls minds work: "do you really think it's a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?" (344). Boys and girls his age frequently tease the other gender in similar ways. His humor is shown when he describes the aisle the girls go up as the "cat-and-dog-food-breakfast-cerel-macaroni-rice-raisins-seasonsing-spreads-spaghetti-soft-drinks-crackers-and-cookies aisle," (345). The word choice used by Updike is humorous because of the several syllable words used. Macaroni, spaghetti, and cookie are simply funny words to say. Sammy pokes fun at the way people conduct themselves in supermarkets with his comment, "the girls were walking against the usual traffic (not that we have one-way signs or anything)" (345). His sarcastic humor is at how people get stuck into routines that are amusing. Next Sammy comments on the ridiculous purchases that people make in an effort to save money with a bargain deal when a character walks past carrying giant cans of pineapple juice: "What do these bums do with all that pineapple juice?" (346). Not only does Sammy have a sense of humor towards the aspects of life around him, but he is able to have a sense of humor about himself as well. "When my parents have somebody over they get lemonade and if its real racy affair Schlitz in tall glasses with "They"ll Do It Every Time" cartoons stenciled on," (346). Most adolescents his age would be embarrassed at his parents" behavior; however, Sammy makes a joke about the way that his parents are.
