General Characteristics of an "Unregulated Buyer".
In order to make intelligent, and controlled purchasing decisions, consumers must posses a certain quality called self-observation. Self-observation is "the monitoring of one's own actions to provide diagnostic information about the impact of behavior and the attainment of goals"(LaRose). So, in layman's terms, do you have the ability to think logically about what you"re buying? There are many disrupting stimuli that can interfere with one's ability to self-observe, such as intense shopping urges, and seductive retail displays. The difference between an unregulated buyer and a normal consumer is that ability to continue to make those informed buying decisions despite the allure of the store. General symptoms that are associated with this unregulated buyer are: buying items that are not needed or affordable, shopping for longer than intended, and irresistible shopping urges which lead to stress that interferes with the consumer's social and or financial life. "These symptoms describe a state in which self-observation is disrupted by a pre-occupation with buying or by feelings of distress or uncontrollable urges"(LaRose). Many case studies of compulsive buyers indicate a continuous internal self-control battle, often times resulting in a "willful disruption of accurate self-observation by blocking thoughts about credit card balances"(LaRose). .
So how does e-commerce promote unregulated buying?.
