Baptism

Any Greek scholar would confirm that the word "baptizo- in the first century meant, "to immerse- (Miller).
Baptism, like belief, repentance, and confession is a part of God's plan for the forgiveness of sin. No one can be saved without the blood of Jesus Christ. Therefore, water baptism is the means by which one contacts the blood of Christ (Smithson). Paul explains how this is done. "Know ye not, that so many of us were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death; that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in the newness of life- (Rom. 6:3-4). Newness of life, being born again, comes only after being buried in the death of Jesus Christ through baptism.
Every individual is born into iniquity and grows up to be a man or a woman who by their own choice chose to continue to sin. However, God has provided a means for us to wipe the slate clean and start all over. Author Paul Smithson refers to this process as "the washing of regeneration-. Smithson explained the washing of regeneration with the explanation that Jesus gave Nicodemus, a Jewish ruler, about rebirth. When Jesus started talking about being born again, Nicodemus, not understanding, asked, "How can a man be born when he is old?- But Jesus explained that He was not speaking of a physical re-birth, but a spiritual re-birth by the water or the Spirit- (Jn 3:1-7). Paul Smithson suggests that the rebirth, or idea of regeneration, describes the change of an individual's experience when he becomes a citizen of God's kingdom through a spiritual rebirth. This spiritual rebirth involves the washing with water, a baptism. Jesus told Nicodemus that he must be born of the water and born of the Spirit (Jn 3:1-7). Peter explained that this washing of regeneration involved baptism declaring,"" baptism now saves you "not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but the appeal to God for a good conscience "thorough the resurrection of Jesus Christ- (1Pet 3:21).
