Democracy lacks the stability necessary to ensure that government is controlled and efficient. Although it is true that generally one party remains in power for a number of years, there is constant change within those parties and when compared to a monarchy for example a democracy is constantly in a state of upheaval. Under these conditions, what useful changes can be made? There have been times when one government will initiate change in one area and then the next government changes everything right back again. This is like two children squabbling with a parcel, pulling it backwards and forwards between them until the parcel breaks.
Supporters of democracy think that this is one of the most beneficial aspects of the system - that no politicians can use their power for their own benefit because they cannot retain power for very long, comparatively speaking. In the example above, although no-one gets to play with the toy inside the parcel, at least no one child walked off with it and played with it all on their own. .
In a democracy every individual shapes his own life in his own way. According to Plato this means that in a democracy there can be no unity. Although people may agree on some things, the kind of unity that you need for a truly efficient and good society, where everybody fulfils the role they are best suited to and which best serves society. Clearly this doesn't happen in a democracy. In a democracy many people choose their careers like a pick"n"mix - a stint of teaching here and a dash of construction work before you help yourself to a large handful of politics. This is one of Plato's biggest gripes. He feels that you should be given a balanced meal - the right work, the right education regardless of what you think yourself. In his ideal society, ruled by the philosopher kings, all individuals join together in a concerted whole to move forwards together, and are happy doing so.
