The Crucible In The Name of the Father

There are many similar issues and ideas explored in the novel, The Crucible by Arthur Miller and In the Name of the Father, directed by Jim Sheridan. In the respect that they are founded upon real life events, parallels in issues, such as abuse of power and authority, social injustice and human nature, can be drawn. These issues are naturally portrayed differently. In The Crucible, Miller uses characterization, dialogue and stage directions whereas in In the Name of the Father, Sheridan has used various film techniques, such as music, camera angle, and lighting in.
Abuse of power and authority is one of the main themes explored in both texts. In The Crucible it is seen when Parris encourages Abigail to falsely accuse Tituba of witchcraft. He does not want to be associated in any way to witchcraft, and does this in order to save his reputation as a Reverend. His intentions are clearly outlined in his dialogue with Abigail, but if you trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it. Later he threatens Tituba, and forces her to confess to witchcraft. He says, You will confess yourself or I will take you out and whip you to your death, Tituba. It is clear to the audience and Parris that she is being mistreated, yet with his reputation at stake, Parris exploits his power, in order to keep his good name. Abuse of power, is further conveyed in the character of Danforth. His statement, We burn a hot fire here; it melts down all concealment, shows how these people had the power to place extreme pressure on people and force out what they were seeking, whether it was the truth or not. .
Similarly in In the Name of the Father we see the abuse of power and authority in the Police interrogation of The Guildford Four, mainly Gerry and Paul. The society demands for someone to be punished, and under this pressure the police are desperate for them to confess to these crimes that they did not commit.
