Conifers


            
             Trees cover a large range of species. They are generally sub-divided into two different categories, evergreen and deciduous. Trees that follow a seasonal cycle and loose their leaves during winter are called deciduous. On the other hand trees that keep their leaves all year and stay green are called evergreen Conifers come under this category.
             It is easy to distinguish conifers as they have unusual needle like leaves instead of having broad flat ones like deciduous plants. They have a peculiar scent which will be familiar to you because of the smell of certain air fresheners and fragrances. They produce a sticky amber substance, which is highly scented -resin. Their seeds unusually are encased in woody cones.
             Because of the conifers tough leaves they are able to grow in colder parts of the world. Conifers dominate most forests in the far north they are some of the only trees that can bare the freezing temperatures of the northern latitudes.
             Because generally they are fast growing plants they are valuable lumber and are exported all over the world.
             The tallest conifers are the Giant Redwoods of North America. These awesome trees can grow up to 300 metres that is 3 times the height of the Science Centre Tower in Glasgow. Conifers are among some of the longest living and biggest plants around and live up to 3000 years.
             There has been pine in Scotland for 8500 years the native species is the Scots pine, which at one time covered 70% of our country and is now considered an endangered species of plant.
             So a conifer is a needle leaved, cone bearing, fast growing tree which can grow to an immense size.
